The Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) has ordered the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), to secure all ballot boxes from 57 cities and municipalities, where electoral fraud was allegedly conducted. The PET abruptly decide to hold vote recounting after the Supreme Court (SC) dismissed Vice President Robredo’s appeal to junk former Sen. Bongbong Marcos’ petition on February 22.
The Supreme Court has already dismissed two Robredo appeals since January 2017.
Although Robredo’s camp can still file a motion for reconsideration, and motion to block Marco’s petition, the PET’s decision for May 27 manual recount is already final according to election lawyer Ernesto De Alva. De Alva is a member of Marco’s legal counsel headed by former COMELEC Commissioner Sixto Brillantes.
The recounting of votes is estimated to be completed on June 30.
COMELEC has already appropriated 128 million pesos for manpower, equipment, logistics, and other expenses.
One of Robredo’s legal counsels, Atty. Marissa Tahanglangit said that they were saddened by PET’s sudden decision, and accused the camp of Sen. Marcos for manipulation.
Marco’s camp however accused Robredo’s camp of delaying the process by filling two counter motions which both junked by the Supreme Court.
“Senator Marcos feels vindicated. We are confident that the result will be far different from what the previous count released. This time will be in our favor. People already knew who the real winner is and we cannot take away the truth from the people”, De Alva said.
It is unclear as of the press time if what move the camp of Robredo is planning, but PET already said the recount decision is final. /Eli Martinez/
