The New People’s Army (NPA) on Friday announced that their campaign on revolutionary tax will be maximized starting March in order to finance Sen. Leila De Lima’s legal battle.
Region 11 Secretary of Finance, Ka. Olimpio Sandoval said on Friday that his group vows to help the senator because De Lima, during her tenure as commissioner of human rights help the rebel group cover its atrocities.
Leftist Senator Risa Hontiveros also urged the rebel group to help De Lima.
NPA earlier offered De Lima political asylum, but the senator rejected the offer and preferred to get arrested.
De Lima is not known to be a member of New People’s Army, but her ideologies align with the rebel group.
Local businessmen, especially in rural areas in Mindanao feared that the rebel group will intensify its operation and ask unreasonable amount of revolutionary taxes.
Businessmen in Davao already asked assistance from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
