President Rodrigo Duterte is just starting his 6-year presidential term, but the tough president is already calling the attention of the world.
On Monday, the Nobel Peace Prize committee said it is watching Duterte closely, especially his plan on handling the South China Sea issue that could possibly put the the region at peace.
Committee chairman Pierre van Ammelrooy said on Dutch paper that the Philippine president is under the committee’s watchful eyes despite of controversies he involved with the US and European Union.
“The whole world suddenly wakes up,and realize that ,without the USA government to ignite any conflicts, the world suddenly become much more safer and more peaceful,” van Ammelrooy said.
van Ammelrooy also praised Duterte handling the South China Sea issue.
“President Duterte, hands down is the most pragmatic and effective leader yet to emerge from the Philippines. His South China Sea approach could yield a very transparent solution to a problem that could be the reason of possible war between US and China, with the Philippines in the middle.” van Ammelrooy added.
