On Thursday, Feb 4, 2016, news about cash found behind the walls of Makati City Hall broke online after authorities were alerted about the incident.
On Monday, Makati City Officials were surprised by dozens of bundles of old and uncirculated Philippine Peso bills after workers break the floor inside the Makati City Mayor’s Office.
Notable finds are 20-peso bills that appeared to be in perfect condition and never been circulated in a bundle of 1,000 pesos.
The Philippine Central Bank (BSP) earlier told the media that they are going to claim the money because it could not be used anymore.
Atty. Nicolas Nograles from BSP said, the money, regardless of the amount will be destroyed it can be used anymore. “There is no replacement because no one is claiming as the owner”, he said.
Authorities are still puzzled on who ordered to keep the money in an unlikely place, and why it is left there. The source of fund is also being investigated as 6 bundles of 500 and 50 peso bills are marked with BPI and Equitable (now BDO) banks.
Junjun Binay, the ousted mayor who occupied the office for a considerable amount of time refused to give comment on Monday.
Construction workers are still working in the area together with police officers.
“So far, the total amount of money we found sine last week is already 7,897,450”, City Administrator Atty. Eleno M. Mendoza, Jr said. /Carla Lorenzana/
