Journalists Union: Trillanes Brings Disgrace on Senate

The International Union of Freelance Journalists – Philippines (UFJ-P) on Friday took a swipe on Senator Antonio Trillanes IV over his rough behavior towards fellow Sen. Allan Peter Cayetano  during the senate hearing a day before.

UFJ-P chairman and journalist Maria Lourdes Acosta on Friday criticized Trillanes and called him a thug.

On Thursday, during a senate hearing on extra judicial killings by the alleged Davao City Death Squad (DDS), Trillanes interrupted Cayetano and switched-off the latter’s microphone while he was talking. The two exchanged tirades prompting Sen. Leila De Lima to interfere and deescalate the commotion.

Acosta said Trillanes lost control of himself and became rude.

“I think he though there was no media around, and think he forgot that they are in the senate hearing. I believe he used to tell people like that. His attitude was really really rude”, Acosta said.

In separate interview, Independent Journalists Association of the Philippines (IJAP) president Daniel Caraig released a stronger statement over Trillanes’ attitude.

“Walang matinong Senador ang gagawa non. He brought disgrace on the Philippine senate. This is what you get when you give a convicted mutineer a chance to sit on Senate,” Caraig said.

“Most of us inside the hall were shocked by Senator Trillane’s attitude. I think that was not necessary”, freelance journalist and South China Morning News reporter Jenny Chan said. /Lourdes Tamayo/
