Controversial actor Baron Giesler gained support from a group who said the government’s plan to transfer him to Caballo Island is unconstitutional and overkill.
The Universal Taguig Union of Gays (UTUG), a powerful and biggest gay organization in the Philippines, said on Tuesday they will do everything to block the actor’s deportation to the secluded island.
Although a gay association, UTUG’s membership is not limited to gay people. Giesler, who is a straight male is an active member of the association since its creation on 2008.
“We believe that the government is too harsh for Baron. It is an overkill. Why would they put a man who did not committ heinous crime in an island intended for serial criminals? Baron just need time, attention, and care to change his life for the better”, UTUG chairman Cheska Ramirez told reporters on Tuesday at UTUG’s headquarters in BGC.
UTUG filed certificate of candidacy in the May 9 national elections but the COMELEC disqualified the group from party list system.
Ramirez said they plan to hold massive gay protest on Aug. 28 in front of Camp Crame.
“This will be the biggest gay protest. We want to send message not only to the president, but to all Filipino people that they need to listen to us. We are part of the community. Baron is our kind member and we will act as one behind him on Aug. 28”, Ramirez said.
Ramirez added that they are already in coordination with more than 100 gay associations from Region 1 down to CALABARZON.
United Tanauan Gay Association (UTGA) chairman Renata Platon also said more than 500 of their members from Batangas will join the rally. /Zandra Caballero – BGC/
