Ex-NPA Commander, Now Owner of 5 Star Resort in El Nido

When Santiago “Ka Santi” Javellana resigned as head the New People’s Army (NPA), Propaganda Organizing Team (POT) in Negros Island on March 2006, many people, even the local media gave him short time to live due to kidney problem.

Following his resignation as head of POT, Ka Santi surrendered and was confined at Riverside Hospital in Bacolod City. His Doctors gave him 18 short months to live because of kidney failure. Since his discharged, no one knows where Ka Santi had gone – and no could tell whether he was still alive.

Ten years after the former commander had gone, the healthy Javellana resurfaced in an island far from Negros – a place not infiltrated by his former rebel group.

Javellana was an active official of labor union called National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW) in Negros. He was from a poor family working in sugar cane plantation. He joined the CPP-NPA on 1986 and because of his higher education; he was tasked to lead the NPA’s recruitment group.

Javellana also served as the provincial treasurer of NPA for five years before he resigned and surrendered.

Now a successful businessman and owner of a five star resort in El Nido, Palawan, people who knew him personally believe that he got his wealth from the rebel group during his tenure as treasurer.

“I am 76 years old now and I believe that whatever I have right now has nothing to do with the NPA anymore”, Javellana said.

Although his oldest son and two daughters are all American citizens, his ex-comrades who are still struggling in Negros believed that Javellana’s wealth are ill-gotten.

“This is my second life after my son donated one of his kidneys to me. I have no regrets and no fear for whatever happens. I am ready to die anytime. This is the life that I chose”, Ka Santi added.

Ka Santi also urges members of NPA to surrender and live a normal life. /Frankie Salvador/
