DU30 Mulls on Having Government-Controlled Telco if PLDT, Smart, Globe Won’t Improve Internet Speed

It seems the complaints over slow Internet speed is reaching the ears of President Duterte after the president’s hotline or 8888 receive  thousands of calls about slow Internet since Duterte assumed office on July 1, 2016.

Top official from the office of communications said on Friday that the president is asking communications and technology advisers if it is possible for the government to build its own telecommunications company with support from private investors.

The official, who refused to name himself because he was not authorized to give full details, said that the President is looking to improve the country’s communication system to expedite information, and for the government to have more control on transmitted messages and calls that may put the country’s security at risk.

Last year, San Miguel Corporation and Telstra tried to enter the Philippine market, but the plan failed under the Aquino administration. The group plan to resubmit their business proposal under the Duterte administration.

Sen. Loren Legarda once disappointed with local TELCO’s when she lost Internet connection inside her office and missed important emails.

PLDT, Globe, Smart, and Sun Broadband are among the top Philippine companies with the worst customer service record according to several consumer websites and forums./Abeb Zubiri/
