Cebu mudslide yields suspected treasure box, WWII ruins

Residents of Carmen town in Cebu called the authorities after unidentified boxes were unearthed following a massive mudslide caused by deadly typhoon Crising on Holy Saturday.

Brgy. Chairman Crispolo Sumug-ang said they were afraid to touch the boxes which were partially revealed in fear that it might contain WWII explosives. Another wooden box which is partially damaged also revealed old firearms and ammunitions.

The metal box which is about 4 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet tall contains mixed metals according to a local treasure hunter who first checked the box using a swipe metal detector.

Residents gathered at the site where three bodies were found, but Brgy. Officials later barred the people from the area citing safety concerns.

Police cordoned the area waiting for officials from National Historical Commission and bomb experts.

Several local people who tried treasure hunting before speculate that the box may contain gold bars and other precious jewelries.
