Bongbong’s DILG takeover will not jeopardize his poll protest, lawyer says

Although there is no final or clear indication that President Duterte will pick former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos as the next Interior Secretary to replace the ousted Ismael Sueño, sources close to the President says there is a very high possibility that BBM will take over the position.

Last January, rumors surfaced that Duterte will appoint Marcos as DILG secretary, but the President was quick to dismiss that Bongbong was not interested.

But what if Duterte’s offer is still open and Bongbong say “YES”?

According to Marco’s lead legal counsel former Election Commissioner Sixto Brillantes, “Bongbong joining the Duterte Cabinet will not jeopardize his poll protest anyway”.

This only means that the headache of VP Leni Robredo is only becoming bigger just in case BBM becomes the next DILG chief.

It will be difficult to battle one person in two wars according to Brillantes.

Not only that BBM will secure the most-sought Cabinet position, he is also continuing his battle against VP Robredo while holding the said position. Win or lose in poll protest, BBM is still a clear winner in bringing himself again close to the people.

Although the camp of Robredo might do everything in their power to block Marcos’ appointment, or to dismiss his poll protest if ever he is appointed, the Robredo victory in any of this cases will be unlikely according to Brillantes.

As DILG secretary, Marcos has all the opportunities and chances to reclaim himself and build more trust to the people.

Marcos however could vacate the DILG position and replace Robredo once he win in poll protest. /Janesa Sinamay/
