Vice presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was invited by Iglesia ni Cristo leader Eduardo Manalo for breakfast. The sect is known to be a bloc-voting religious party and its recommendations would surely have a significant impact on the total garnered vote of any candidate it chooses to endorse.
Along with Marcos, senatorial candidates Rep. Martin Romualdez and former Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino have also received the support of INC.
But more than the solid INC backing, members of the second biggest religious group in the country will also be campaigning for the three national candidates whose names will be included in the “sample ballots” that will be distributed in the sect’s chapels throughout the country.
A very reliable INC source said the information about endorsement of Marcos, Romualdez, and Tolentino came ahead of all other candidates to allow its faithful to campaign for their election.
The source said INC members have started posting on social media the first three choices although the religious sect’s leadership has made no official confirmation of the said information.
On a press conference held on Wednesday, April 27, Marcos told the media that he went to see Ka Eduardo Manalo. According to the senator, they have talked about a lot of things. When tapped about INCs endorsement, the senator did not give further details.
He emphasized that the decision lies at the palm of the sect’s hands. Quoting exactly what he said, he emphasized that, “Kung ano man ang kanilang decision ay ating ipapaubaya sa kanila.”
Recently, Manalo have also met with presidential candidates Manuel Roxas II, Senator Grace Poe, Vice President Jejomar Binay and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. But, among the vice presidential bets, it is only Marcos who have been invited personally by the INC leader.
Asked to comment, Romualdez who was in Balanga, Bataan, said he will still try to confirm the good news.
“This is huge. I will not disappoint them for I will do everything to be worthy of the trust and confidence they will give me,” said Romualdez when informed about the news.
According to Marcos, he has known Manalo for many many years. In fact, the INC has been solid supporters of his father.
Should he get the endorsement of the sect, with at least 1 million estimated bloc-vote by INC, Marcos will surely find victory over Robredo who has been topping polls.
Pulse Asia’s latest survey reveal Marcos as the leading vice presidential bet at 29% while Robredo got 24%. As with Social Weather Stations on the other hand, the two tied up at the first spot.
