Leftist group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) has reportedly received funds from billionaire businesswoman, Filipino-American Loida Nicholas-Lewis, an insider told Radyo Totoo on Monday.
BAYAN Secretary General Renato Reyes Jr. allegedly went to RCBC main office in Makati on Monday morning to facilitate the transfer of funds, and to distribute half of the money to other left-wing party lists like Gabriela and Kabataan.
The leaked report was reportedly given to the media by an insider closed to Mr. Reyes.
Nicholas-Lewis is a staunch critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, and parts of the alleged funds is said to be given to the New People’s Army as military intensifies its offense against the rebel group.
If proven true, both Lewis and BAYAN will face money laundering charges as the funds is taxable and transferred without proper documentations.
Money transferred from overseas above one million pesos must be verified by Anti Money laundering Council (AMLC).
According to the insider, this is the biggest funds from overseas received by the militant group and Reyes is expected to get a bigger share.
Nicholas-Lewis and other Filipino-Americans loyal to Duterte’s critics have been accused of plotting against the government to oust Duterte – a claim denied by both Lewis and Liberal Party. /Arthur Lacsamana/
