17 Rape-Convict Catholic Priests in Danger if Death Penalty is Imposed, VACC Says

The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) said that there are 17 Catholic priests who are in danger of losing their lives should the capital punishment is reinstated.

Atty. Fortunato Oreta, spokesman of VACC confirmed over Bombo Radyo on Friday that the church officials are facing life sentence due to multiple rape cases and child abuse.

Oreta added that the main reason why the Catholic Church is against the return of death penalty is that, it is protecting its convicted officials from eminent danger.

The Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is campaigning against the re-implementation of capital punishment and vows to do everything to block the bill.

Six of seventeen convicted priests have been in maximum security for 18 years without parole facing multiple life sentences.

Although the CBCP already excommunicated 12 of the said 17 priests, CBCP chair Socrates Villegas still hopes that the priests will be released sooner or later.

VACC is the only civil rights group that supports the return of capital punishment.
